Still Lifes in Graphite
Still lifes are a form of observational art: I draw from life rather than a reference photo. Objects from around the house are used to set up a composition. I'm forced to be creative because of the limited subject matter, but have control over lighting and positioning, which means greater flexibility for dramatic effects and storytelling. The soft darks of graphite pencils show off strongly lighted scenes the best. I consider my still life has succeeded if even simple objects like cloth take on a personality, or if it makes me laugh, while simultaneously being fine art.
