Plein Air Drawings in Bic Pen
These plein air line drawings are completed on location, without reference photos or retouching at home. They are drawn freehand, meaning without grids or guides. I use my pen to calculate basic measurements to see how the scene will fit on my page, and then I draw as accurately as my eye/hand coordination allows. I have become deeply interested in negative space, the shapes and spaces surrounding an object rather than the object's shape itself, almost to the point of obsession. Especially when drawing intricate tree branches and trunks I can indulge this interest, and you will see it influencing all my artwork. I chose to use Bic pens because their Roundstic line of pens ALWAYS work smoothly and they last for an extremely long time. I can't say enough unsponsored good things about them. I chose blue because years ago when I first bought a box they happened to be blue and eventually I brought them everywhere in my purse because of their reliability. When I began getting serious about sketching again, I was frustrated that the graphite would constantly smear inside the sketchbook, so I switched over to pen when I was practicing linework. By then, I was so comfortable using the blue Bic pens that it was a simple artistic choice to continue using such a durable, permanent, reliable tool. I'm a huge proponent of using what you have to create instead of waiting to own all the "right" tools. Begin! And see where it leads.
