Last year, a friend invited me to a fb group to do Inktober. I was illustrating my Sea Otter book at the time, so I drew the prompts with a Sea Otter theme. It was excellent drawing and creativity practice. This year I'm going to do the same with an emu theme. You can catch the daily sketch on my @explorationsincartooning instagram.

What is a Perentie? It's a giant lizard from Australia! I've been drawing Perenties lately because they're going to be featured in my next book about emus. I've been enjoying honing my lizard-drawing skills. Lizard legs are particularly difficult because they're very floppy when they're at rest, which is difficult for me to draw. But then when they're in motion there's the same combination of stiffness and pliability that is present in human arms and legs which is also difficult to reproduce. In other words, when I can draw a realistic perentie leg, it makes me very happy inside. Little joys like that are part of why I keep coming back to the sketchbook to practice. There is so much to discover!
My latest project is a children's illustrated story about emus! I don't remember exactly why I chose emus, but their perpetual outraged and offended faces make me laugh. It also became a personal challenge to create an engaging story about emus because emus don't have much going for them. They are so far from being endangered that they are almost considered pests, and they are overshadowed by their showier relative, the ostrich. I can't post much artwork yet because it's under wraps until it's published, but I can't wait to share it!
Hello Viewers and Readers! I decided to start a blog so if you follow me you can hear the latest news. My artwork is tied up with my love of classic books, laughter, trance music, and Christ and His Church. My goal is to regularly write and illustrate children's books, adding a little delight to the world. I also have side projects in the works, mostly inside my head and partly spilled in ink, graphite, and colored pencil onto the sketchbooks. Glad you're here. |
